A label is any kind of tag attached to something so as to identify the object or its content. Labeling means naming. It is human instinct to group things with what they are most similar and name them as a whole. We live in a world filled with labels antagonising each other to win our preference. There are labels associated with consumer products and fashion, people voluntarily label themselves in order to have a sense of belonging to a group, but there also labels that people use to categorize others stemming from feelings of racism and xenophobia, political and religious discrimination, etc. What is the role played by these signs in your own life? By how could a label to describe better the world you live, how can a label to give the infinite set of experiences, beliefs and desires summarize each human being?
All of the above are just a few of the many ways one can approach this year’s competition theme “Labels”.

Το Athens Bench Mark αφορά δύο διαγωνισμούς και ένα εθελοντικό πρόγραμμα:
Διαγωνισμός βιομηχανικού σχεδίου Athens Bench Mark ως τις 6 Απριλίου: είναι ο διαγωνισμός που θα δώσει το σχέδιο για το νέο παγκάκι της Αθήνας. Το κοινό θα αναδείξει τα καλύτερα 100 σχέδια και η κριτική επιτροπή θα αποφασίσει για την τελική τριάδα έργων, οι δημιουργοί των οποίων θα λάβουν και τα χρηματικά έπαθλα. Ένα τουλάχιστον σχέδιο θα υλοποιηθεί και θα παραχθεί μαζικά ώστε να επιπλώσει την Αθήνα!

The competition is open to any photographer or artist using the photographic medium.
Only photographers/ artists who have not had an important exhibition in a gallery, or cultural institution of international importance, may take part.
The competition does not distinguish according to genre; portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, fashion etc are all admissible. No age restrictions apply.

TFL Moquette Competition

From graphics to roundels, tube stations to textiles, Transport for London is steeped in a history of innovative design. As part of the gradual refurbishment of London’s transport system, Transport for London and London Underground are pleased to announce an open competition to design a new seating moquette for use on the Underground system. The winning design, which will initially launch on the Piccadilly line, will then be adopted across the London Underground system. This is your chance to become part of the fabric of London design and transport history and for your work to be seen by over 3 million tube users every day.
Entrants are invited to submit up to two repeat pattern textile designs using the colours specified in the design brief remembering that your design will be used for public seating so will need to be commercially viable and take into consideration wear and tear and soiling.
The winner will receive a design fee of £5,000 which includes copyright purchase.
CLOSING DATE 14th September before 5.00pm GMT.
(I really hope I can find some time for a couple of ideas for this..)
